Module Objectives

This module describes the key structural features of academic writing. It explains the importance of: 

• understanding that all writing/communication should be guided by its purpose 

• developing focused and coherent paragraphs/segments that introduce, develop, and conclude the discussion with clear topic sentences and smooth transitions that build a logical, cohesive presentation of your position 

• constructing sentences that convey their meaning and significance clearly and efficiently to your reader 

• using direct quotations and summaries and paraphrases appropriately 

• understanding how outlines can assist in organizing any type of writing/communication 

• following a consistent process for planning and formatting your writing/communication
