Structure & Purpose

The structure of your writing should be guided by its purpose. Just as architects must pay attention to the activities that will take place in the spaces they design, writers must be attentive to the purpose of their assignment and the conventions of the discipline of the subject matter they are dealing with.

Instructors’ assignments usually indicate the purpose of the assignment you are being asked to complete; thus, it is important that you read assignment instructions carefully to ensure you understand what you are being asked to do.

Academic assignments usually ask you to describe, connect, argue and/or analyze the material/topic you have been assigned. Click the sections below to view suggestions on how to structure your writing for each of these purposes.
