Citations and Bibliographies
When you use the words,ideasor arguments of other people in your academicassignments, you must acknowledge those sources. Where you make theseacknowledgementswill depend on the type of assignment.
- You will need to include (in-text citations or footnotes) in written assignments such essays or power point presentations. In oral presentations, where in-text citations are impractical, it would be appropriate to name the author or creator and the title of the work instead.
- And for all types of assignments, including media assignments such as videos or podcasts, your instructor is likely to require a written bibliography or reference list made up of (bibliographic citation)
While the bibliography presents full bibliographic information for each source, the in-text citations provide very brief identifying information without breaking the flow of the text and point the reader to the full reference in your bibliography.
When using another person’s work, you may quote them directly using their exact words, or indirectly, by summarizing or paraphrasing their language or ideas (for more information, visit the Gathering & Noting Ideas and Writing Strategies modules).
Whether you quote directly or indirectly, give credit to the original author in your assignment, using in-text citations or footnotes where appropriate, and in your bibliography or list of references.
